We’ve all been there; we’ve all done that (and hopefully done that right). Dressing up for the boyfriend’s (or girlfriend’s) folks tends to require just as much thought as you would need to put into dressing up for a job interview. The easiest way out when visiting an Indian parent is to wear a salwar or a kurti, something that feels familiar yet beautiful to the beholder’s eye, and therefore modest. But salwars and kurtis aren’t all you own, and it’s probably best she knows that too.
Luckily, there doesn’t seem like there’s too much to it, if you just took a look at Kate Middleton’s chic and effortless style. And she’s the daughter-in-law of the Queen of England!
See how she wins the Queen’s heart (and ours) with her style:
- The First Meeting
The first time you meet her, may be over a dinner, or over tea. Either way, you’re officially being introduced and (hopefully) have had the time to prepare for it. Depending on the seriousness of the occasion, go for an a-line dress that ends at the knee, pair them with a neat pair of pumps. It may be casual or super-official, but keep it dainty, keep it pretty.
- The After-Work Catch-up
There will be times (and this is most times) when you’ll end up catching up after work for a coffee. But you never know if you might be meeting her friends or a member of the extended family. At times like these, wear something that makes you feel confident yet comfortable. Pair your ankle-length trousers with some bold stripes or a scarf, and wedges.
- The Comfort Zone
Once you start entering that comfort zone, start playing up your fun (but grown-up) side. Wear your fun pants, and colour block by pairing it with a fitted t-shirt with elbow length sleeves, or a smart shirt. Wear some fun flats or some comfy wedges, and you’re good to go.
