Trends and fads come and go. And we find ourselves quoting, and re-quoting Coco Chanel… “Fashion fades, only style remains…”
The magazines continue to tout Hepburn and Monroe for their classic style. But what is it about their style that makes them seem so relevant, so many decades after they wore that outfit? It’s because they didn’t just own the look, they were the look.
Their outfits were true to their personalities and themselves.
(Who else, apart from Monroe would have the spontaneity to play with their dress while standing over an air vent, instead of hobbling on awkwardly?)
So we’re looking at ways to help you figure your personal style. Let’s get on with it, shall we?
- Be inspired
Some people’s style scream “soul sister” the minute they walk in. Do you like going experimental like Sonam Kapoor? Minimal like Kangana (love!)? Or bold like Beyonce? Identify somebody you identify with, and start by studying what you love about it.
- Make it your own
If you love your Yoga pants, but you can’t really pull it off at those boardroom meetings, it’s okay because now you know the silhouette you like. Translate the look to the boardroom with say fitted cigarette pants, boxy shirts and blazers, and voila! You’ve got your own boardroom look!
- Leave your signature
This is a tough one as it’s a bit of a commitment. Find a stand-out piece that can be a constant. It could be a jacket, a scarf, a locket, a bag (or even a briefcase really!)
- Take Aim
Purge your closet out and shop right. Think about where you are, where you want to be and where you’re about to get to. Shop for the job you’re gunning for. Shop for that long trip you’re about to make.
- Catalogue YOU
Why ever did we stop playing dress-up? Look into your wardrobe and play around a bit. Take some pictures of outfits you love. And when you wear them, see how you feel in it. You may have just found a look you love and feel great in. Now own it. Be it.
